KING ME
Through the eyes of South African township resident, Lubabalo Kondlo, King Me explores the surreal world of international competitive checkers. Kondlo faces opposition from the governing checkers body of South Africa, who insist he “move beyond” his mistreatment during Apartheid and learn to survive in the modern society, despite having no education and living in a world that lacks opportunity for employment. He has a chance to circumvent this organization and support himself and his family through checkers, however, when he earns the right to challenge the reigning checkers champ, Ronald “Suki” King, a colorful character who has spent the last 2 decades as a professional checkers player.
King Me tells the story of a game that struggles for respect and the kooky characters who love it, and shows how a seemingly meaningless game can change everything for one man who lives life on the fringes.
